Dusty required reading? Not at all!
We’re freeing Faust from his (yellowed) book covers and, through this interactive, multimedia exhibition at the Schiller Museum, inviting visitors to explore, participate in, and reflect on Goethe’s literary universe.
The quest for eternal youth and omniscience, the exploitation of nature, and the fateful longing for power in a capitalist world—everything that concerns us today is already a theme in Goethe’s work. For the first time, the literary exhibition “Faust” presents a contemporary interpretation and explores what the story of the ambitious, crisis-ridden scholar Heinrich Faust and his diabolical companion still has to say to us today.
To this end, the exhibition develops its own forms of presentation and media, including collaborations with the renowned comic artist Simon Schwartz, graphic designer Ariane Spanier, and film experts from the Deutsche Kinemathek. Immerse yourself in this tragedy about humanity, knowledge, and seduction through expressive typography and a collage of Faust films.
Thematic sections on nature, gender relations, and the Capitalocene shed light on the astonishing relevance of Goethe’s literary masterpiece. The exhibition focuses on objects from Goethe’s extensive collections of nature and art—here, visitors can see what the famous author observed and what he grappled with while writing “Faust“.
“Faust: An Exhibition” is an invitation to engage with this uniquely multifaceted work, addressed to everyone: to those who have read *Faust*, to those who plan to read it, and to those who are not yet sure if it is for them.
