The White Man’s House

Kunstfest Weimar, Weimar

2019

The publication “The White Man’s House—A Lithograph by Johannes Itten (1921)” is an exploration of the lithograph of the same name by Johannes Itten, which he created in 1921. Upon closer inspection, the seemingly simple depiction of a white house composed of cubes in the middle of a garden offers a deep insight into the painter’s inner world—a world in which he was not only committed to the Bauhaus theories of color and form but was also an enthusiastic follower of the racially charged sect Mazdaznan.

This publication examines various aspects of the lithograph and Itten’s biography through scholarly essays, artistic contributions, and historical documents.
