Building on the inter\u00advention \u201cRefreshment Space 2\u201d at the OSTEN Festival in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the master\u2019s program \u201cCultures of Curation\u201d is presenting an exhibition in the Rapid Response section of the Grassi Museum of Ethnology. In \u201cFermenting: Perspec\u00adtives on \u2018the East,\u2019\u201d we explore what \u201cthe East\u201d might mean today and how attri\u00adbu\u00adtions associated with \u201cthe East\u201d can be conti\u00adnually redefined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A concrete-sealed wine cellar, rice wine, and pickled cucumbers: As a group, we work with the overar\u00adching concept of fermen\u00adtation as a metaphor to explore ways of engaging with history\u2014first at the Bitterfeld-Wolfen indus\u00adtrial site and ultim\u00adately at the GRASSI Museum of Ethnology. Fermen\u00adtation is one of the oldest methods for working with micro\u00ador\u00adga\u00adnisms to make matter more durable, diges\u00adtible, and otherwise usable. Above all, however, it is a living process that allows us to imagine possible futures. In what ways can the changes and upheavals emerging in the attri\u00adbu\u00adtions of \u201cthe East\u201d be captured using the metaphor of fermen\u00adtation and made visible in the museum?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In three chapters (TRANSFORMING, SPECULATING, FERMENTING), the exhibition traces the evolution of our under\u00adstanding of \u201cthe East\u201d and draws on the processes of preser\u00advation, trans\u00adfor\u00admation, and specu\u00adlation inherent in fermen\u00adtation to convey its impres\u00adsions of Bitterfeld-Wolfen into the museum space. In addition to thoughts and stories about objects in the collection that stimulate ideas and imagi\u00adnings of \u201cthe East,\u201d the exhibition brings together various artistic positions that explore the poten\u00adtials of trans\u00adfor\u00admation. A disused exhibition space in the museum is integrated into fermen\u00adtation processes just as much as soil, fruits, plants, or mementos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
